Destroying the factory was the objective of the mission. Stopping those fighters from being made was important cause they WAAAY outclass the alliance fighters and having superior fighters was their one military advantange over the empire.

except that’s rendered completely meaningless by the fact that the tie defender program was already on thin ice and in danger of being completely scrapped in favor of the death star that was favored by everyone of consequence (palpatine, vader, tarkin despite what he tells thrawn).

what bearing did it have on their actual fight to take back control of lothal from the empire?  am i missing something?
