lando’s luck is amazing for having such a nuanced and wonderful mother-daughter relationship at its center. you just don’t get that in star wars, ESPECIALLY when the mother and daughter in question are black women. i seriously can’t recommend this book enough

Listening to the Celebrating Female Writers NYCC Comic Con panel

spaceasianmillennial:

  • Delilah Dawson of Phasma calls Ewoks Murderbears. She also loved writing Phasma because Phasma is a shameless monster.
    • Justina Ireland playfully replied, “She’s a CAREER-MINDED WOMAN.”
  • Justina Ireland of Lando’s Luck said that back then the Star Wars fandom was not a friendly place for black women like her. Now today, that changed.
  • Ireland said she has “fan theories that would make you cry.”
  • So I feel it’s really important while L3′s fate was shoddy, and the Solo novelization exacerbated the worse implications of L3′s fate, it really seemed that Mur Lafferty indirectly referred to the backlash, though she likely couldn’t say more due to spoilers.
    • Lafferty, without referring to the backlash specifically, mentioned that people saw “the fate” differently, and went, that’s fine.
    • It’s important that Lafferty herself likes the “robots sacrificing things for other robots” trope and the appeal is understandable on a board stroke.
    • So it’s important that while I still disagree with Lafferty’s decision and it ended up doing more harm on the larger implications of L3′s fate and agency, I can respect that her admiration for sacrifice was her individual perspective as a woman.
  • Mur Lafferty really likes Lego Darth Vader.
  • Lafferty made a goal of fleshing out female characters. She was told she “didn’t flesh Beckett enough” and responded with, “Hm,” because it didn’t occur to her that Beckett needed more to be said about him.
    • Lafferty wrote more about Enfys Nest but was ordered to cut stuff out.
  • Dawson says she would like to hang out with Kylo Ren.
  • They were asked if they were Pantsers or Plotters. They were all pretty much Plotters when it comes to writing about Star Wars, which has strict canon.
  • When asked if on the dark or light side, Dawson said she was “Mandalorian.” Ireland said she was “Smuggler.”

Justina Ireland’s words especially stick out to me. It’s awesome not only can she say things are changing for the better, but that she herself wrote a pretty freaking awesome book that’s helping to change that!!!!

I know that Lando’s Luck, which stars not only Lando, but a 13 year old black princess named Rinetta and her mother the Queen, will make a lot of young black girls really happy. If you have a chance to read it, DEFINITELY pick up a copy (it’s on Hoopla for free, if your library has that!)!! And share it with any young girls who would benefit from reading a book like this.
