Cultural appropriation is a form of colonialism where cultural elements are copied from a minority culture by members of a dominant culture and used outside of their original context. Cultural appropriation differs from equal cultural exchange due to an imbalance of power from oppression. The imitator can temporarily “play” an “other” without experiencing the daily discrimination faced by that people. Traditions, symbols, and art with deep meaning may be reduced to “exotic” fashion or toys.
